Maybe since they are releasing a Surface Dock 2 shortly after the Book 3 they wanted to make in incompatible. I don't know if this is a graphics card think or Microsoft made a change to prevent this when they realized that some people were using the Display Docks they could get for cheap instead of buying the first gen Surface Dock. While it has the same configuration and type c port that the 2 has (albeit with better specs) it does not seem to work with my Display Dock. This was super exciting except that I just upgraded to the new Surface Book 3. Today I learned that my Microsoft Display Dock (that I've kept around from using with my Lumia 950 XL but has been essentially collecting dust) can be used as a portable Surface Dock minus the charging ability for a Surface Book 2 and a Surface Go.
